Below you will find the compiled material guidelines for Alma’s print ads. With these instructions, you are able to get started with designing your own printed advertisement.

General instructions for print advertising

TECHNICAL INSTRUCTIONS: GENERAL PRINT GUIDELINES – ALMA BUSINESSMEDIA

Magazines

Arvopaperi, Mikrobitti, Talouselämä ja Tivi.  Images and graphics as high resolution CMYK images (300 dpi) in EPS, JPG or TIFF format.

Tabloids

Kauppalehti, and Tekniikka & Talous. Images and graphics as high resolution CMYK images (220 dpi) in EPS, JPG or TIFF format.

File format

Materials must be submitted as printable PDF files, at least in Acrobat 5 (PDF 1.4) format. Images in CMYK format. Graphics and logos in CMYK process colors. No following elements: RGB or Index colors, ICC profiles, OPI links, must not contain any color profiles. Advertising materials in digital form. The materials are stored for a maximum of 3 months.

NOTE! Please note in magazines ads: 5 mm bleed and corner marks. Internal margin recommendation 10 mm.

Font

Fonts must be included in the PDF file.

Font cuts to be used

We recommend using Adobe Fonts. TrueType fonts are not allowed. Texts should be converted to paths if possible. We do not recommend text sizes below 9 points in Tabloids and less than 12 points in negative text in ads.

Separation recommendations

Newspaper reduction must be taken into account when making the material. Total color coverage 240%. Dot spread in midtones 22%. Profile to be used eg WAN-IFRAnewspaper26v5. Repeated tonal area in Kauppalehti 3-90%

We recommend 75% achromatic (GCR) separation.

Maximum black min. 85%, which starts with already light shades. (black starts when cyan is 5%)

We reserve the right to change the color content of the advertisement to match the printing process of the magazine.

We do not recommend the use of 4-color black or the use of small dot-sized negatives or elements due to possible misalignment due to the printing method.

TECHNICAL INSTRUCTIONS: IL PRINT GENERAL INSTRUCTIONS

Iltalehti accepts only materials that qualify for newspaper and are saved into PDF format. The material has to be:

  • PDF in real 1:1 size
  • Cut without background
  • RGB or CMYK colors
  • Resolution of pictures 220 dpi                                                                                                                                                                                                                                          

PDF document should be named so that the advertiser and publication date are shown in name, for example company010620.pdf.

Ad material can be made either by Mac or PC, by the most common professional graphic software (NOT word- or powerpoint). When using a PostScript file, it has to be converted into PDF by using Adobe Acrobat Distiller software. The version of pdf should be 1.3-1.4. Recommended version is 1.4 (Acrobat 6).

Fonts have to be included with the PDF document. Iltalehti is not responsible for wrongly printed fonts that have not been included in the PDF document.

If using CMYK colors, it is not possible to use 4-color black. The colors should be defined as process colors and pictures have to be differentiated to CMYK format. Total ink coverage in CMYK colours and pictures is not allowed to be over 220 %.

Screen ruling is 40 lines per cm. The raster points enlarge 20-30%, when printed on newsprint.

The ad has to be exactly the size of the booked ad space. Everything in the PDF document will be printed, which means all elements, like alignment marks, which are not supposed to be in the ad, should be avoided.

If the material is not in the required PDF format or is otherwise faulty, it will be delivered back to the maker.

Size and format requirements

If ads are not the height of a full column (365 mm), the maximum height is 280 mm.

Five (5) column ads are not published in the text (except A4).

The minimum size of ads is 300 mm.

Embeddings
Print advertisement can be tailored to fit around the page editorial content so that its embedded in the lay out that covers about half of the page area. Embedded print ad over the spread covers about half of the entire spread area. Embedded ads are always placed on the sports pages. Contact media sales for more information. ATTENTION Embedded print ads are custom placements so they have to be always negotiated and planned individually.

IL SPECIAL ISSUES Technical Guidelines

Technical specifications

IL-Media accepts only materials that qualify for newspaper and are saved into PDF format. Recommended version is 1.5 (Acrobat 6).

Fonts have to be included with the PDF document. IL-Media is not responsible for wrongly printed fonts that have not been included in the PDF document.

Total ink coverage in CMYK colours and pictures is not allowed to be over 300 %.
Screen frequency is 60 lines / cm. Line frequency tone images of 300 dpi and line images of 600 dpi final size .If the material is not in the required PDF format or is otherwise faulty, it will be delivered back to the maker.

Ad size: Ad side of the page

The ad elements (image and base) must be 3 mm bleed. Material must not contain any frames. Text and logos ie. elements must not be placed 8 mm closer to the edge of the page. Cutting marks must be outside of the material and bleed.

Ad size with margins

Between notification and the side of the page will be white margin. For example, materials with frame is prepared in this size.

We recommend the delivery of separate material for digital, in order to guarantee the best functionality for the campaign. 

  • A target address (url) is required for the digital material.
  • The advertising message must be the same as in print
  • Light animation is ok

If necessary, the material of the full page of the print can be used as such in both print and digital.

  • For spreads and vertical halves, the material cannot be scaled, and a separate material is always needed
  • The advertiser can also separately prohibit the use of a print ad in digital, but this has no effect on the price, and lost digital impressions will not be reimbursed afterwards

The delivery time of the materials is three days before the start of the campaign.

Iltalehti classified ads

Material requirements

The material should be packed in Zip format. The materials to be prepared must be accompanied by a layout template, a manuscript and the necessary slides, color negatives, photographs or drawings.

The material should be delivered primarily by e-mail to il.luokitelut@ahaavalmistus.fi. CDrom also works.

Programs

Documents created with Illustrator or InDesign, and Adobe Acrobat PDF that meets newspaper requirements.

Fonts

Materials to be prepared Adobe Font Folio Open-Type Edition font, www.adobe.com/type. In PDF files, fonts are attached to the PDF file. For technical print reasons, it is not possible to use four-color black.

Pictures and graphics

As high resolution CMYK images. 220 dpi is recommended for 1: 1 image resolution.

Color values

Defined in CMYK colors. Prints on request and only for notifications over 100 pmm.

NOTE!
The word MAINOS should read at the top and bottom of each pages outside edge of the insert and advertorial.

  • Write in capital letters and bold sans serif font (e.g. Arial Bold./Helvetica Bold)
  • Font point size 12 pt
  • The color must stand out clearly from the base color

Material instructions for Alma Businessmedia inserts

The advertiser and the fixed insert – as well as the loose insert – must be marked with the identification text “MAINOS ” in letters at least the same size as the body text of the advertisement.

The color of the tag text must be as distinct from the base color as the body of the ad.

For an ad, the tag text is placed in both top corners of the ad. For inserts it is placed on the front page, and in the top corners of each page.

All attachments must be marked with the identification text “MAINOS” in letters at least the size of the body text of the advertisement in height and thickness.

Technical specifications for print magazines:

TECHNICAL INSTRUCTIONS: IL PRINT GENERAL INSTRUCTIONS

Iltalehti accepts only materials that qualify for newspaper and are saved into PDF format. The material has to be:

  • PDF in real 1:1 size
  • Cut without background
  • RGB or CMYK colors
  • Resolution of pictures 220 dpi                                                                                                                                                                                                                                          

PDF document should be named so that the advertiser and publication date are shown in name, for example company010620.pdf.

Ad material can be made either by Mac or PC, by the most common professional graphic software (NOT word- or powerpoint). When using a PostScript file, it has to be converted into PDF by using Adobe Acrobat Distiller software. The version of pdf should be 1.3-1.4. Recommended version is 1.4 (Acrobat 6).

Fonts have to be included with the PDF document. Iltalehti is not responsible for wrongly printed fonts that have not been included in the PDF document.

If using CMYK colors, it is not possible to use 4-color black. The colors should be defined as process colors and pictures have to be differentiated to CMYK format. Total ink coverage in CMYK colours and pictures is not allowed to be over 220 %.

Screen ruling is 40 lines per cm. The raster points enlarge 20-30%, when printed on newsprint.

The ad has to be exactly the size of the booked ad space. Everything in the PDF document will be printed, which means all elements, like alignment marks, which are not supposed to be in the ad, should be avoided.

If the material is not in the required PDF format or is otherwise faulty, it will be delivered back to the maker.

Size and format requirements

If ads are not the height of a full column (365 mm), the maximum height is 280 mm.

Five (5) column ads are not published in the text (except A4).

The minimum size of ads is 300 mm.

Embeddings
Print advertisement can be tailored to fit around the page editorial content so that its embedded in the lay out that covers about half of the page area. Embedded print ad over the spread covers about half of the entire spread area. Embedded ads are always placed on the sports pages. Contact media sales for more information. ATTENTION Embedded print ads are custom placements so they have to be always negotiated and planned individually.

Total ink coverage in CMYK colours and pictures is not allowed to be over 300 %.
Screen frequency is 60 lines / cm. Line frequency tone images of 300 dpi and line images of 600 dpi final size .If the material is not in the required PDF format or is otherwise faulty, it will be delivered back to the maker.

Ad size: Ad side of the page

The ad elements (image and base) must be 3 mm bleed. Material must not contain any frames. Text and logos ie. elements must not be placed 8 mm closer to the edge of the page. Cutting marks must be outside of the material and bleed.

Ad size with margins

Between notification and the side of the page will be white margin. For example, materials with frame is prepared in this size.
