Alma Media’s premises switched to zero-emission electricity
Alma Media has reduced the greenhouse gas emissions of the properties it controls in Finland by switching to zero-emission electricity and by improving the energy efficiency of its properties.
In 2018–2019, Alma Media implemented an electricity purchasing programme that saw all of the Group’s properties in Finland switch to zero-emission electricity. This supports more sustainable energy production based on the use of renewable sources of energy instead of fossil fuels and non-renewable energy sources.
The original switch schedule was by 2020 but the concentration of electricity purchasing to the Group level made it possible to accelerate the project. The use of zero-emission electricity has played a significant role in the reduction of the carbon dioxide emissions of Alma Media’s premises.
“In the future, we will review the opportunities to reduce our emissions in the remaining property emission sources: district heating, district cooling and the electricity used in properties abroad. When it comes to district cooling, Alma Media’s head office in Helsinki started to use zero-emission district cooling at the beginning of 2020 and, as for district heating, the aim is to switch to zero-emission district heating during 2021. After that, Alma Media’s head office functions will operate in completely zero-emission premises,” says Alma Media’s Facility Manager Jarno Lintunen.
The use of zero-emission electricity is associated with Alma Media’s science-based emission reduction targets.
