A single sign-on solution for Alma Media’s content and services

Alma Media Corporation                                  Press Release 2 December 2020

Alma Media has widely introduced Alma Account as a single sign-on solution for most of its digital services. With Alma Account, users can sign on securely and device-independently when using Alma’s various media, services, discussion forums and applications.

Alma Account enables smooth switching from one service to another in Alma’s digital network of 25 services under the single sign-on principle. The most widely known media include Iltalehti, Kauppalehti, Talouselämä, Arvopaperi, and Tekniikka&Talous. Alma Account can also be used to access digital services, such as, and as well as Alma Talent’s business services. There are already more than 450,000 registered users and the monthly number of visits to the various media and online services is approximately 250 million.

– “We want to make using Alma’s content and services easier by doing away with separate service-specific registration. We are now offering users a smoother path to subscribe to the comprehensive news content provided by our media, follow information on topics related to business, politics and free time and use our diverse automotive, housing and recruitment services,” says Sanna Koivuranta, the Product Owner in charge of the Alma Account project.

Alma Account enables a better user experience and the use of media- and service-specific special features. Alma Account also includes a self-service account, which can be used to manage personal data and, for example, to view the service usage history. With the self-service account, the user can easily submit an information request concerning their data, if necessary.

By signing on, users can, for example, use the notification service provided by Etuovi and Vuokraovi, create lists of their favourite properties and post their own housing advertisements. In Kauppalehti’s online services, users who sign on can use the My Portfolio service, participate in discussions with other investors and post comments on news and blogs. Users who sign on using their Alma Account can also discuss and comment on news in Iltalehti’s online service and the website. When the user switches from one service to another while signed on with their Alma Account, the service recognises the user and automatically offers the opportunity to continue using the service while remaining signed on with the Alma Account.

Alma Media takes a long-term approach to the development of its online services and offers secure and diverse services to consumers and advertisers. With its continuous investments in data protection and information security, Alma Media aims to ensure that customer data is stored, managed and utilised responsibly.

High-standard and information secure technology is used in Alma Account’s single sign-on. User data is stored in information security audited environments and Alma Media observes the obligations stipulated by the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) in processing the data. In digital advertising, Alma Media observes the IAB’s self-regulation principles and uses a consent management solution that is in line with the Transparency & Consent Framework programme.

The use of the Alma Account will expand to include all of Alma Media’s media and digital services in Finland. The functionalities of the self-service account will be developed. With this account, users can, for example, see for which purposes the data collected with their consent is used and what their own user profiles based on this data looks like. In the future, it will also be possible to edit the user profile to match the users’ individual preferences, subscribe to newsletters related to interesting subject areas and manage matters related to their own subscriptions through the self-service account.i
