Lower CO2 emissions through lighting

In 2018, Alma Media carried out a lighting renovation project at its Siperia office in Tampere to introduce LED lighting and a smart lighting control system.

The changes reduce the CO2 emissions arising from electricity consumption by more than 42 tonnes per year.

Shifting to LED lighting was part of Alma Media’s responsibility programme, which has energy efficiency as one of its goals: Alma Media’s target is to reduce the direct CO2 emissions arising from the Group’s operations by 21 per cent by 2025.

According to Alma Media’s Facility Manager Jarno Lintunen, there were also other renovation needs in the office, and the 17-year-old fluorescent lights were close to the end of their life cycle.

“The smart control systems we installed generate substantial energy savings. On sunny days, for example, the lights are automatically dimmed quite low. Going from fluorescent tubes to LED lighting also creates significant savings in the electricity consumption of lighting,” Lintunen says.

Lighting needs to be adjusted not only for improved energy efficiency, but also because certain tasks require dimmer lighting than others.

“A programmable system enables us to control the lights as necessary and its flexibility will continue to be useful in the future as the needs of the users change,” Lintunen adds.
