Alma News Media joins SPUR coalition to promote fair rules for the use of journalistic content in AI
Alma News Media has joined the international SPUR coalition, an international initiative developing global technical standards and licensing practices for collaboration between publishers and AI platforms. The coalition already includes around 60 publishers and industry associations from across the world, including AP, BBC, Mediahuis and Bonnier News.
SPUR was established in early 2026 when five UK news organisations launched the initiative and invited other publishers to join. Its aim is to ensure that publishers retain control over how their content is used and receive fair compensation for that use.

“The future of AI must not be built at the expense of quality journalism. Content should not be used without permission, and publishers must be compensated when it is,” says Timo Kämäräinen, AI Director at Alma News Media.
SPUR is currently developing a standard designed to create a common framework for reporting how AI systems use publishers’ content. The first version of the standard is now being finalised.
“There is strength in numbers. A collective voice gives the news media industry’s demands significantly greater weight,” Kämäräinen continues.
Alma News Media publishes Iltalehti, one of Finland’s leading news media brands, and Kauppalehti, the country’s leading business news publication. Its media brands reach approximately 80 per cent of the Finnish population each week. Alma News Media’s membership further strengthens SPUR’s Nordic representation.
About the SPUR Coalition
SPUR (Standards for Publisher Usage Rights) is a not-for-profit coalition founded by BBC, the Financial Times, Guardian Media Group, Sky News and Telegraph Media Group.
