Using AI Well Is a Leadership Skill
While working with AI coding agents intensively I learned an uncomfortable lesson. I initially blamed AI when it did not produce results I was expecting. After a while it clicked with me: I am failing to manage AI properly.
This post explores how management skills transfer directly to working with AI. When AI struggles, the problem may not be artificial intelligence at all. It may be how you manage it.
Specification as a First-Class Skill
The most transferable management skill is specification. Strong managers turn fuzzy intent into concrete, testable expectations: they define what “done” means, surface constraints and edge cases, and remove ambiguity before work begins.
AI responds to the same discipline. If you want to improve, don’t start with AI. Practice writing specs that another human could implement without a single follow-up question.
Task Decomposition
Experienced tech leads excel at breaking work into independently verifiable chunks, separating exploration from execution, scaffolding from polish, and risky changes from mechanical ones. This maps directly to effective AI use.
Knowing what to hand off to AI versus what to keep yourself is a key skill as well. It’s called delegation.
Feedback Loops and Iterative Direction
Many developers who are new to AI tools expect a one-shot answer. When it fails, they conclude the tool is unreliable. Experienced managers instinctively do the opposite: they tighten constraints, clarify intent, and rerun the loop.
Using AI well means getting comfortable with short cycles: generate, review, correct, repeat. To practice, deliberately stop treating AI output as final. Ask for drafts. Ask for alternatives. Ask it to explain its reasoning.
Context Setting Without Oversharing
Senior leaders learn a subtle skill: providing just enough context to enable good decisions without overwhelming the recipient. Too little context leads to wrong decisions. Too much context leads to confusion or ignored information.
AI has the same failure modes.
Dumping an entire codebase or document set into a prompt is rarely effective. The skill is selecting the few constraints, examples, and principles that matter for this task right now.
Quality Control and Trust Calibration
“Trust but verify” is not cynicism; it is professional hygiene. Strong managers build systems where mistakes are caught early and cheaply. Tests, reviews, checklists, and gates exist because humans and AI both make confident errors.
Developers who adapt well to AI tend to be obsessive about verification. They assume output is wrong until proven otherwise. They design workflows where AI accelerates production but never bypasses validation. This is a mindset shift: you are not delegating responsibility, only execution. The accountability remains yours.

To get better at using AI, just use it. When it inevitably produces something wrong, confusing, or subtly broken, resist the reflex to blame the model.
Instead, pause and ask a harder question.

- What constraints did I leave implicit?
- What checks did I skip because I trusted too early?
- What judgment did I delegate that I should not have?
AI is an unforgiving mirror. It does not compensate for unclear thinking, and it does not ask clarifying questions unless you invite it to. When it fails, it often does so in ways that expose how well—or poorly—you led the work.
