Alma participates in the UN SDG Ambition training – aiming to strengthen inclusion

Alma Media participated in the UN Global Compact initiative’s SDG Ambition, a sustainable business training program, in spring 2025.

The program brought together 19 Fnnish companies to develop their sustainability efforts. The training utilized SDG Ambition benchmark guides as tools to help companies implement the UN’s sustainable development goals in their operations.

– This training provided us with a valuable opportunity to evaluate our own activities. Sustainability work is never complete; we must continuously develop more impactful and future-proof business practices, describes Minna Kemppainen, Alma Media’s Brand and Sustainability manager, who took part in the training program.

Focus on DEI

During the SDG Ambition training program, participating companies selected one development theme to continue working on after the program. Alma chose DEI –  diversity, equity, and inclusion – with a particular emphasis on strengthening inclusion.

– Developing the skills of our own personnel is a strategic success factor, and it requires equal opportunities for everyone. Choosing this topic was natural for us, as equal learning and development opportunities have also emerged in our previous materiality analysis, Kemppainen explains.

Alma will enhance the impact of its DEI work especially through the development of communication, culture, and processes.

– Our corporate culture already receives praise for its friendliness and for allowing everyone to be themselves. We want to maintain these strengths and ensure that everyone feels seen, heard, and valued. This work is largely related to culture, communication, and, for example, the development of supervisory work, describes Lotta Väinölä, Head of Employer Branding and the other Alma participant in the SDG Ambition program.

According to Alma’s Code of Conduct, every Alma employee must respect fundamental human rights, and the company has zero tolerance for discrimination and inappropriate treatment of its employees. Every Alma employee has the right to a safe and pleasant working environment as well as respect for privacy.

Sustainability targets as criteria for the remuneration of personnel

Alma’s sustainability goals are part of the criteria for rewarding personnel, including top management. There are seven sustainability goals used as the basis for rewards, one of which is the Peakon Engagement Index measuring employee experience. In addition, personnel skill development is monitored in three ways: participation in training sessions open to all personnel, personal work objectives, and particularly by examining the retention of new employees.

In engaging and developing talent, Alma measures its success through annual personnel surveys that comprehensively investigate employees’ experiences of the functionality of the work community and Alma media as an employer.

Alma has been member of the UN Global Compact since 2011.
