How students got involved in real work tasks during TET Work Experience Week

The daily life in Alma Media’s Helsinki office was once again enlivened at the end of March and beginning of April by upper secondary students participating in Alma’s TET Work Experience Week. This time, there was a record number of students, eight in total.

– At Alma, it is considered important to organize our own TET Work Experience Weeks and to participate in the development of the TET.fi website, which compiles all TET positions in Finland, so that all young people, i.e., future job seekers, have equal and diverse opportunities to familiarize themselves with working life, says Minna Kemppainen, Alma’s Brand and Sustainability Manager.

At Alma, the TET students’ program includes a diverse range of information and activities. The students get to hear stories from experts in various fields about their work and careers. This spring, they heard from sales, marketing, and developers among others. Additionally, the students worked on journalistic articles under the guidance of Iltalehti and helped prepare Alma’s Annual General Meeting, Alma Insights’ training event, and worked on Alma’s internal communications and brand merchandise.

– Our TET always includes a group project that is worked on independently by the group, and the final product is presented to Alma employees at the end of the week. This time, the group task from Jobly dealt with artificial intelligence in job searching and in future working life, Kemppainen describes.

This is the article that the TET students themselves wrote about their week:

Hello, we are the TET students at Alma Media. During this TET week, we got to know Alma Media and the different areas it includes. Among us, there are many skilled individuals interested in a wide range of things. What stood out the most from the week were the project work given by Jobly and the news task done with Iltalehti.

Most of us didn’t know what Alma Media was before the TET week. During the week, we got answers to all our questions. Some things interested some of us more than others, but the main thing was that there were interesting topics for everyone during the week. The employees were friendly and helpful. Alma Media managed to get us all interested in the field, and everyone left with a good feeling about the week.

Work Experience Week (TET) is a period included in comprehensive school studies, during which upper secondary school students get to familiarize themselves with working life by working for a week or two in a specific company.

Alma typically organizes its own TET periods for several students 1-2 times a year. Applications for Alma’s TET periods are made through a separate application process that opens in the TET.fi service. Alma, in collaboration with the Children’s and Youth Foundation and Jobly, develops the TET.fi service in Finland, which compiles open TET positions across the country. The service is intended for both young people looking for internships and companies offering positions. The site provides companies with ready-made tools and materials for organizing TET weeks.
