Iltalehti won a prestigious international award with its artificial intelligence solution

Iltalehti has won the top prize at the esteemed INMA Global Media Awards. The award was granted for Iltalehti’s emotion classification analysis created with the help of artificial intelligence, which combats news fatigue and avoidance.

Iltalehti won in the category Best Innovation in Newsroom Transformation for national media outlets.

The idea behind the emotion classification analysis is to make visible to the newsroom the kinds of emotions that individual contents and the overall content offering evoke. This helps ensure that the content provides as balanced a mix as possible of positive, neutral, and negative emotions. The emotion classification analysis also indicates how strongly the content is, for example, inspiring, constructive, sad, entertaining, empathetic, provocative, analytical, questioning, or useful.

– We at Iltalehti and Alma Media have invested heavily in the development and implementation of AI-based tools. This award is proof that our expertise is not behind that of the world’s largest media companies, says Iltalehti’s editor-in-chief Perttu Kauppinen with joy.

In addition to Iltalehti, other media giants such as the Washington Post, Daily Mail, Boston Globe, Dow Jones, South China Morning Post, and Schibsted won top prizes in various categories.

This year, Iltalehti was the only Finnish media outlet and Alma Media the only Finnish media group to win a top prize in any category.

The INMA Global Media Awards gala was held on Thursday, May 22, 2025, in New York. The annual awards gala of INMA (International News Media Association) is perhaps the most prestigious competition in the media industry.

Awards were given in several categories for both regional and national media.
