Pia Ruusukivi: At Alma you always get to challenge yourself in new ways

Pia Ruusukivi, Director of Digital Development at Alma News Media, is an excellent example of how a long career at Alma Media can provide continuous growth, new opportunities, and meaningful work.

Pia Ruusukivi has worked at Alma in various roles since 2000.

“I started at Kauppalehti Online as a web journalist. My first years were very much like working in a startup, and I got to build new business hands-on”, Pia recalls her early days at Alma.

As Alma Media grew and changed, Pia had the opportunity to expand her skills and move into different positions — from editorial secretary to product owner, and from development manager to leadership roles.

Currently, she leads the digital development of Alma News Media, the segment focusing on media business at Alma. The unit includes around 70 employees: designers, developers, and data wizards who are building the digital future of media in close collaboration with editorial teams and business operations.

The best learnings come from working in different roles

One of the motivating factors for Pia has been the chance to take on new challenges whenever her personal development called for them.

“Whenever I’ve needed a change, there have always been roles available that allowed me to challenge myself in new ways”, says Pia.

In different roles, she has been able to broaden her expertise in business, technology, and leadership.

A flexible and friendly workplace

One part of Alma Media’s employer promise is that you can truly be yourself at work. Pia feels this is reflected not just in words, but in daily life.

“I feel that at Alma, I can be myself. Here, diversity is valued and space is given for different perspectives and styles.”

Pia is especially happy with how Alma has supported combining family life and work.

“I was at home for a few years when my children were small, and this in no way negatively affected my career. During the busy years of family life, everything was always arranged flexibly.”

A vantage point to an industry in transformation

Pia has witnessed the digital transformation of the media industry from a front-row seat. She vividly remembers moments such as hearing about Google and Facebook for the first time.

Today, the hottest topic is generative artificial intelligence. It has sparked a new transformation in both media business and the way we work.

“I’m looking forward to experiencing also this transformation at Alma. Courage and collaboration have always been part of our culture — they help us succeed, even in the age of AI”, Pia sums up.
