Alma Media Corporation Press release 24.7.2018
Police starts a preliminary investigation on the recruitment process of Aamulehti Editor-in-Chief
Alma Media has received information from The Central Finland Police Department that a preliminary investigation concerning the recruitment process of Editor-in-Chief of Aamulehti has been initiated. The police is investigating possible employment discrimination. The selection process took place in Tampere at the end of 2017. According to the police, the investigation will continue with the hearing of persons concerned and other parties.
Alma Media states it is positive that the matter is being investigated. That will ensure legal protection for all parties, and bring clarity.
The preliminary investigation is related to an article published in the Suomen Kuvalehti magazine about the Aamulehti's Editor-in-Chief's recruitment process. According to Alma Media the article contains incorrect understanding of the events related to the selection process. Alma Media emphasizes that the company adheres to the principles of equality and diversity in its recruitment policy.
- One of the important criteria in the recruitment process was the ability to move and be based in the publication area of the newsmedia. I am sorry about the wrong impression received by the applicant that parenthood, according to the applicant’s understanding, would have been a relevant issue in the recruitment process. Overall, many of our most recent business leader recruitment and editors-in-chief appointments have been women, says CEO Kai Telanne.
The selection of the provincial newspaper editor in chief requires strong and visionary journalistic skills, leadership skills, corporate relations and excellent networking skills. It is also required that editor-in-chief would have a strong presence among the regional readers and in the local business community. These criteria apply to both the male and female candidates. When interviewing the applicant, several candidates were still involved in the process, and no preferred candidate existed. The final decision was based on the overall applicapibility of the candidates and the best candidate was chosen.
