Alma Media Corporation Press release 11.10.2018
ALMA MEDIA BECOMES THE THIRD MEDIA COMPANY IN THE WORLD TO SET LONG-TERM EMISSIONS TARGETS
Alma Media has become the third media company in the world to set CO2 emissions reduction targets approved by the Science Based Targets initiative. Before Alma Media, the only media companies to have set SBT targets were News Corp, which publishes The Wall Street Journal, and UBM, which is best known as a B2B event organiser.
Alma Media’s SBT target is to reduce the direct CO2 emissions arising from its operations by 21 per cent by 2025 and to reduce the indirect CO2 emissions caused by its subcontracting chain by 10 per cent by 2023. These targets will be achieved by improving the energy efficiency of properties and by developing the logistics and material use of Alma Media’s printing facility.
“Alma Media has pursued the long-term development of its corporate responsibility for many years in several areas, including environmental issues. By setting ambitious emissions targets, we bear our share of the responsibility in the fight against climate change,” says Alma Media’s President and CEO Kai Telanne.
“To expedite the reduction of emissions, we have decided to switch to zero-emission electricity in Finland by the end of the decade,” Telanne adds.
The international Science Based Targets organisation has approved Alma Media’s long-term targets. The organisation’s goal is to encourage companies to set targets that are in line with the global reduction targets stipulated by the Paris Climate Agreement. Science Based Targets is a collaboration between the UN Global Compact, the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF), the Climate Disclosure Project (CDP) and the World Resources Institute (WRI).
In addition to Alma Media, four other Finnish companies have already set science based emissions targets. About 140 companies have set SBT targets globally. The foundation of Alma Media’s corporate responsibility is responsible journalism, high-quality marketing, information security and data protection, which constitute the core of the company’s business operations.
