There is a lot behind the photographs printed on a magazine or a newspaper except just the photographer and a flash. The work at the photography department also includes visual planning, providing ideas for photographs, photo shoot arrangement and getting to know many kinds of people and topics.
– The work is brisk and has many aspects. It is interesting and creative to work in the inspired atmosphere among workers of Lehdentekijät, says Mervi Ahlroth, Phto Editor from the photography department of Lehdentekijät.
Mrs Ahlroth has seen Alma Media from many angles. She started as picture editor while studying and later worked as a freelance photographer and temped at Alma's various photography departments. Besides Iltalehti, her pictures have appeared in Aamulehti and Kauppalehti.
Mrs Ahlroth's different jobs at various business units of the group around Helsinki have given her a good overview of the work of Alma's photography departments. At the moment, she is gaining experience as the head of Lehdentekijät's photo department.
– Besides the managerial work, I am a photo editor for more than twenty magazines. It involves keeping a lot of balls in the air at the same time, but that fits with my nature.
Alma Media believes in the power of images. For example, the internet presents new challenges to photo journalism. Mervi Ahlroth also believes that the visual aspects of newspapers will be emphasised in the future and hopes that a large media corporation like Alma Media provides good opportunities to do it in the future.
