Alma Media provides more than 30 Internet services, most of which are the result of the company’s own R&D. In terms of user numbers, Alma Media is the largest provider of Internet media site services in Finland. These services, based on content produced by Alma Media itself, are used by over 440,000 people every week. Some 400,000 of these are registered in Alma Media’s customer management database. The applications contain a number of patented or patent-pending immaterial rights. Alma Media Net Ventures Oy’s operations will be broadened in scope. Alma Media Net Ventures has hitherto been responsible for Alma Media’s R&D in new media as well as maintenance and development of the Group’s Internet applications. In addition to these tasks, Alma Media Net Ventures Oy will henceforth also be responsible for commercialization, in Finland and abroad, of the Group’s customer management, content production and e-commerce business concepts, new media applications, patents and other Industrial Property Rights. Alma Media has acquired holdings in several new media companies including Domiras Oy, the California-based Netsage Corporation, Wireless Commerce Limited Oy (WCL), which maintains Alma Media’s eTori service, and Almare Oy in Tampere. Alma Media’s New Media business unit had net sales in 1999 totalling FIM 29 million. Organic growth during the current year is expected to exceed 100 %. The New Media business area is headed by Mr Raimo Mäkilä. Many of the business concepts and applications developed by Alma Media are not language-related and can therefore be exploited internationally as well as in Alma Media’s own products, says Mr Mäkilä. Alma Media Net Ventures will initially evaluate the potential for commercialization of Alma Media’s business concepts and immaterial rights, with the objective of starting commercialization proper during the current year.
