WCL, Radiolinja, Microsoft and MTV3 Internet present: THE FIRST INTERNET AUCTION SITE TO USE GSM TELEPHONES

PRESS RELEASE September 15, 1999 WCL, Radiolinja, Microsoft and MTV3 Internet present: THE FIRST INTERNET AUCTION SITE TO USE GSM TELEPHONES The new eTori service, which will be launched today at www.etori.fi, is an Internet-based auction site that enables people to participate in auctions independent of time and place simply by using their GSM telephones. eTori is the world's first network auction site making use of various properties of GSM phones. With the help of their phones, customers can follow trading and raise bids in real time. The new auction concept was developed by Wireless Commerce Limited Oy and has received additional support from Tekes, the National Technology Agency. eTori will be introduced to the market by Oy Radiolinja Ab, Microsoft Oy and MTV3 Internet. -- "In the first version of eTori companies auction their products and services to consumers," explains Jouni Mäntylä, CEO for WCL Wireless Commerce Limited Oy, the company that developed eTori. "The concept can later be expanded to cover consumer-to-consumer and business-to-business commerce." Various search and broker agent features inform bidders of developments in the bid process either via GSM text messages or email messages. "Service providers will find eTori an easy concept to adopt. The only things the system requires are a PC and an Internet connection," says Mäntylä. The first service providers to use eTori include travel agencies and suppliers of durable goods. Last-minute trips, for example, are well suited for auctioning in eTori. A truly interactive electronic marketplace application The utilization of GSM telephones for bidding is based on two-way transmission of text messages - a familiar feature to users of Radiolinja's Jukeboksi service. Jouko Lintunen, Manager of GSM operator Radiolinja, takes pride in the fact that Radiolinja is participating in the first ever Internet marketplace to be using GSM telephones. -- "From the point of view of GSM users, eTori is the first truly interactive marketplace application that enables trading independent of time and place," notes Lintunen. "It is important to us that this service is immediately available to all Radiolinja customers. Users need not worry about getting new equipment for existing GSM phones or subscriptions as long as the phone used includes support for text messages. As concerns Radiolinja, eTori is also a step towards future electronic commerce." Microsoft provides application platform and support for international distribution Microsoft is investing heavily in new Internet services in cooperation with its partners. One example of this trend is the eTori service, which is based on Microsoft technology: Windows NT, clustered SQL Server, IIS and objects. "We will support the eTori project in worldwide export efforts concerning Internet and mobile phone operators as well as other parties offering electronic commerce services. Wireless Commerce Limited and the eTori application will also be featured at the upcoming Telecom 99 forum in Geneva at Microsoft's stand," says Timo Annala, leader of Microsoft's Consumer and commerce unit in Finland. New eTori users through Alma Media's Internet services In addition to performing various operations involved in auctioning (such as the highest bid, fastest bid and Dutch auction), companies can also gather information on correct pricing and demand for new products. "MTV3 eTori offers added value to Alma Media's electronic commerce, the ShopIt concept," says MTV3 Internet Sales Manager Lauri Wuorenheimo. "Alma Media's network services have some 400,000 users in Finland, the most popular services being MTV3 Internet, Iltalehti Online and Kauppalehti Online.
